MATRIX BIOLOGY

The field of matrix biology focuses on investigating the extracellular matrix (ECM), a vital non-cellular network composed of proteins, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and other molecules that provide structural support to cells in tissues and organs. This area of study encompasses diverse research themes, including the composition, structure, assembly, and modification of the ECM, as well as its functional roles in cellular signaling, adhesion, tissue development, wound healing, and disease. Understanding the intricate interplay between cells and the ECM is crucial for advancing our understanding of biological processes and devising innovative approaches for diagnosing and treating various medical conditions.

THE SOCIETY

The current Italian Society of Matrix Biology (MBIta) was founded in 1982 as the Italian Society for the Study of the Connective (SISC). MBIta is a member of Matrix Biology Europe (MBE) and also a member of the International Society for Matrix Biology (ISMB).
